What is 'Just Breathe & Run'?
Just Breathe and Run is a charity barrel race created to raise money to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Cystic Fibrosis, also known as “CF”, is a life-shortening, genetic disorder that is typically invisible at first glance. CF is primarily known for affecting the respiratory system; however, it truly affects all of the exocrine glands. One who is affected by Cystic Fibrosis has a salt deficiency due to the salt leaving the body through sweat before it is fully processed. The inability to appropriately process the salt results in sticky mucus that overtakes the lungs, trapping bacteria and viruses.
Just Breathe and Run was inspired by Danika Davis, one of the co-founder’s sisters who battles Cystic Fibrosis and its effects everyday. Danika has the ability to unknowingly inspire every person around her to live life to the fullest. She takes over 20 medications daily, along with multiple breathing treatments. Fortunately, about three years ago, she was started on a medication which changed her life. This medication slows down the progression of the disease tremendously. Unfortunately, not everybody is a candidate for this particular medication, nor is it a cure.
Just Breathe and Run was founded by two high school students, Emily Dodds and Regan Davis. We have high hopes for our race with our ultimate objective being to support further research to find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. At the 2018 Just Breathe and Run Barrel Race, we raised over $20,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
In the past two years, Just Breathe and Run has nearly $50,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The 2019 Just Breathe and Run Barrel Race contestant roster over doubled the previous year’s attendance with near 300 contestants in the open division alone, not including the 25 peewee riders, almost 100 youth competitors, 30 novice contestants and over 40 pole benders. In addition, there were nearly 2,000 spectators who attended this event.
The third annual Just Breathe and Run Barrel Race will transpire on April 24-26, 2020 at Rolling Hills Equestrian Center in Corning, California. Join us in the contribution of finding that last piece of the puzzle in the fight to change CF to Cure Found.
